‘Steven Meisel 1993 A Year in Photographs’

THE FIRST MAJOR EXHIBITION BY THE LEGENDARY PHOTOGRAPHER STEVEN MEISEL OPENS IN A CORUÑA, SPAIN

A Coruña (Spain) will once again be the venue for an extraordinary photography exhibition: ‘Steven Meisel 1993 A Year in Photographs’. This exhibition promoted by Marta Ortega Pérez through the foundation that bears her name may be visited free of charge at Muelle de la Batería in A Coruña from 19 November until 1 May 2023.

‘Steven Meisel 1993 A Year in Photographs’ focuses on the work of this master photographer during 1993, a pivotal period in his career which stands out due to his close collaboration with Vogue magazine. In the space of a year, he shot no less than 28 covers and more than 100 editorials for the magazine.

The exhibition, consisting of images selected by Steven Meisel’s own studio, includes more than 100 portraits of men and women from the worlds of fashion and film, including Linda Evangelista, Carla Bruni, Naomi Campbell, Hamish Bowles, Kyle MacLachlan, Claudia Schiffer, Jaye Davidson, Barbra Streisand, Marlon Richards, Isabella Blow, Amanda Harlech and Twiggy.

Steven Meisel is considered one of the most relevant and prolific fashion photographers of his generation and the driving force behind the careers of many of these supermodels in the 1990s. As Naomi Campbell recalled: “We were very supportive of each other. Work was work but it didn’t feel like work, it was also fun and we would work all hours of the night to achieve what we wanted to achieve — the goal, the look, the whole vibe of the shoot. It was a special time.” According to Hamish Bowles, “Steven Meisel is an alchemist. He can take something that looks like one thing and transform it into something utterly different.”

‘Steven Meisel 1993 A Year in Photographs’ is a project by the Marta Ortega Pérez Foundation (MOP Foundation), which focuses its activity on three pillars: A Coruña, photography and fashion. The MOP Foundation has an exhibition space on the waterfront in A Coruña designed by A Coruña architect Elsa Urquijo. This same space was the venue for last year’s successful Untold Stories exhibition consisting of works by Peter Lindbergh, which attracted more than 110,000 visitors and prompted the creation of the MOP Foundation in 2022.
